I’ve written out a full response to the current situation with the Unity engine and its change in pricing model, with some opinion on the change, reflection on my journey and relationship with Unity, and how it affects plans going forward. You can read it over on the blog, which I felt was a more appropriate place to post it.
A short summary of how this changes my plans for the rest of 2023 and beyond:
- I am not changing engines, at least not immediately. I have too much invested in Unity and trying to redo years worth of work is just too much for me right now.
- Shattered 3 and SE7ENGOKU will continue largely as planned, with a firmer timeline of Shattered 3 in 2024 and SE7ENGOKU in 2024-2025.
- One more Outliers and Outsiders (Magical Girl Gina) game built on Unity and CommonCore planned for 2025, codenamed Big Team Heavies.
- Shattered 4 may or may not happen as planned, I would like it to, but I do have an alternate plan to close out the series.
- There are no long term plans past those projects, I’m leaving it open. This is an oddly freeing feeling.
Making plans like this feels like we’re approaching an end. Maybe not the end of the world, but certainly the end of the chapter. I’m sad to see what’s happening with Unity, and I would even if I wasn’t tied to it. Though not without its flaws, it’s a great engine and there are a lot of incredible people who have worked on it. I go into more detail in the blog post, but in general I just don’t feel Unity is a reliable and trustworthy vendor anymore.
